The Fallen Crown of a Forgotten God

from $7,500.00

The water surges over the black stone like a living force.  For the briefest of moments, water and stone become one. Beyond the crashing spray, the mountains rise into storm and light like the fallen crown of a forgotten god, their jagged peaks half-veiled by cloud and half-revealed by the fading fire of the setting sun. In their presence, I am witness to more than simply a landscape. I feel as though I have stepped back into the first days of the world.

Some part of me buried deep within recognizes this place. Not by name, but by feeling. The cold breath of the wind. The roar of water against stone. The way the mountains stand unmoving beneath the weight of storm and time. It is all somehow familiar.

Long before we separated ourselves from the Earth, places like this were sacred to us.  Some because they were the dwelling places of Gods; some because they revealed the Gods to us. In the crashing lake, the sweeping clouds, and the silence of those towering peaks, I feel a presence.  I can’t see it, I can’t name it, I can’t describe it, but I know it is something vast. It is something that simultaneously awakens and humbles my soul.  Perhaps it is that long forgotten God whose crown lies before me?

Standing here, I do know that awe is more than simply an emotion. It is remembering that I am not separate from the wild but born from it.  I am, in fact, inseparable from it. I just need to find my way back. I realize that somewhere within the noise of modern life, the Earth is still speaking to me; calling me back to myself with a voice formed by wind, water, stone, and light.

In this place, I am learning to listen once again.
